More and more users are choosing BigPicture Enterprise. You don’t need to be big! Think ‘Premium‘ rather than ‘massive’. Flexibility and customizability are key benefits for the small and medium businesses who bet on the Enterprise edition of the most popular PPM app for Jira. Why did they decide to upgrade from BigPicture or even BigGantt? What are the highlights, pricing, and prospects of BigPicture Enterprise?
There are two key advantages of BigPicture Enterprise:
#1. Jira admin or an independent consultant can tailor the app to the unique needs of their organization.
Can’t the users of the regular BigPicture tailor the app to their needs? They can do it on the fly, only when a project, or another Box, is already in place.
BigPicture Enterprise lets an Atlassian Partner, an independent consultant, or a Jira admin preset views before any member of the, say, Agile project Box type (family) is even created; this has to do with an unlimited number of Box types available in BigPicture Enterprise, while the regular BigPicture has just three Box type slots, and they are usually Program, Program Increment, and Iteration.
Wouldn’t it be great to have Classic, Agile, and Hybrid projects predefined with different views, quick filters, and color keys? BigPicture Enterprise can be tailored to any organization’s unique needs.
Example 1: Gantt module can have a predefined view listing epics with their corresponding epic links. See figure 2.
Example 2: Scope module (work breakdown structure) can have a preset view listing features together with market segments these features target.
Example 3: Gantt module can have predefined quick filters, such as ‘business user stories’ and ‘technical user stories’ for each newly created ‘SAFe ART’ Box. See figure 2.
Example 4: Roadmap module can have color-coded objectives, such as green for expanding business geographically, red for those contributing to cost optimization, and blue – for revenue opportunities. Have a look at figure 3.

Let’s move to the second key advantage of BigPicture Enterprise.
#2. No features in BigPicture Enterprise are capped.
Example 5: thanks to no limit on the number of Box types, BigPicture Enterprise supports hybrid project management. We estimate that 80% of all organizations employ the mixed – agile-and-waterfall – approach. Since BigPicture Enterprise has an unlimited number of Box types, you can blend agile projects, classic projects, ARTs, phases, iterations, and whatever beings your methodology calls for. You can even host multiple portfolios in BigPicture Enterprise, as opposed to the regular BigPicture, which only has Programs, Program Increments, and Iterations.
Example 6: BigPicture Enterprise has no cap on the number of what-if scenarios, available in the Gantt and Resources modules. The regular BigPicture allows one public + one private scenario per Box.
Example 7: BigPicture Enterprise will soon provide an unlimited number of charts in the Reports module, while the regular BigPicture may have its limits in the area. In the future, BigPicture Enterprise will have advanced reports, such as Velocity report, Risk matrix report, Resource allocation report, etc.
Who is BigPicture Enterprise for?
As a rule of thumb, each and every organization is better off with BigPicture Enterprise than it is with BigPicture. Other than the two aforementioned key advantages of BigPicture Enterprise, minor enterprise-level features, such as ‘See overall/cross-project allocation of resources’ dot modules. Choose BigPicture Enterprise, even if you run a small corporation.
Take this short test. If at least one answer is ‘Yes’, you will benefit from BigPicture Enterprise.
- Do you run both Project and Product Management?
- Does your organization practice hybrid project management – both waterfall and agile? Does more than one methodology coexist under the roof of your organization?
- Do you use custom project management terminology? Or an in-house developed project management methodology?
- Do you practice PPM, project portfolio management? Or: are you agile at scale?
- Employing cross-project experts, engineers?
- Are you a SAFe practitioner?
- Do you use Tempo for Jira?
- Do you need to store your cloud data in a specific jurisdiction, in a specific part of the world?
- Are you seeking advanced reports and progress tracking?
Again, if you answered ‘Yes’ to at least one of the nine questions, you will likely benefit from the enterprise edition of BigPicture.
If you are making a ‘BigPicture or BigPicture Enterprise’ purchasing decision, consider the following quick preview of how BigPicture will evolve in the coming years.
Evolution
Starting version 8 there is a clearer distinction between BigPicture and BigPicture Enterprise. BigPicture Enterprise is now a PPM and agile at scale tool. While BigPicture leans towards the Project Management category.
Until version 7 the Enterprise edition added a dozen of features on top of BigPicture, none of those features being grand or critical. Version 8, and especially the new Overview module, Box types and Boxes collectively add the portfolio management capabilities to BigPicture Enterprise as well as the “many methodologies under a single roof” distinguishing quality.
